Rich dark chocolate brown verging on mahogany in areas of the reverse. Intact if subtle cartwheel luster on both sides, no noticeable high point friction, very few issues at all. A little mahogany toning spot is noted above the rightmost chimney, no substantial field marks. A light dusting of surface encrustation is visible under a glass.
Though the edges are square, the crudity of the interior rims makes the different between a high grade circulation strike piece and the previous Proof rather obvious. Die break over T of TOKEN. Wilson I (1925), Lot 463 is a piece with the same die break in the same condition; a tiny striking crudity above the right upright of M in MONTREAL that is present on this piece is also visible on the Wilson plate, strongly suggesting that the pieces are identical. The Wilson piece was described as Die broken over T in TOKEN. Scarce as a type, finding one in this quality again would be a Herculean task. Earlier from the Virgil Brand Estate No. 18834, via Jane Brand Allen on June 6, 1961.
